The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has officially completed the selection of the first batch of 2,000 recruits for the 2026 training year. In a significant move to honor those affected by the tragic El-Wak Stadium stampede in November 2025, the military has confirmed the inclusion of 18 individuals who were injured in the incident and 5 others nominated by the families of those who lost their lives.
A Gesture of Honor and Support
Following the stampede on November 12, 2025, which tragically claimed the lives of six young women seeking to serve their country, President John Dramani Mahama directed that automatic recruitment slots be offered to the affected families. Eighteen applicants who sustained injuries during the chaos at El-Wak have been granted automatic qualification to begin their training, provided they have been declared medically fit. Also, five individuals have been selected as replacements sponsored by the families of the deceased, fulfilling the government's promise to support these households and honor the aspirations of those who died.
The GAF noted that there is a large pool of highly qualified candidates from the recent aptitude tests who may be considered for future batches. Additionally, applicants who were previously rejected for minor medical issues are encouraged to seek treatment, as they may be invited back for a free medical review in future exercises.
The regionalized approach to this recruitment cycle was supported by the 16 Regional Administrations to bring the process closer to applicants and avoid the overcrowding seen in previous centralized exercises.
